Title:  Investigating the User Experience of Simulation Training for Surgeons Using Eye Tracking

Synopsis: Health care organizations seek to improve patient care and safety by eliminating the number of medical errors during surgeries. While medical and surgical knowledge continues to grow and new surgical procedures being introduced, surgical training considered essential to improve surgeons’ learning and prepares them for independent practice. Virtual reality-based surgical simulation provides safe and realistic learning environment. Although VR-based surgical simulation is a well-known method for learning and practicing surgery, it considered as the least preferred simulation tool by trainees among others. In this study, we describe an eye tracking study investigating variations between expert and novice surgeons of virtual reality simulation software for surgical training. A sample of nineteen participants took part in the eye tracking study. The combination of physiological and behavioral data provides insights to understand and explain the trainee's skill and behavior. Comparative analysis between expert surgeons and trainees was conducted, and findings suggest variations in the user experience during interaction with these simulation systems across participant groups. Design implications for medical simulation software are discussed.

Speaker's bio: Nada Al-Mohaimeed is a Teaching Assistant at College of Applied Studies and Community Service, and currently she is a MSc candidate at Software Engineering in King Saud University. She received her bachelor degree in Information Technology from King Saud University, in 2011. Her main areas of research interest are Human-Computer Interaction, Usability Engineering and User Experience Design.
