The Development of a QR Code-Based Social Network: LeapIn.it Project

Title:  The Development of a QR Code-Based Social Network: LeapIn.it Project

Speaker: Ms. Noura Alomar, Software Engineering Department, CCIS, KSU

Synopsis: Social networks have becoming increasingly important in modern society. They are used to communicate, form relationships and share experiences. Further to this, they have become increasingly pervasive with the increased popularity of mobile devices and high-speed interne. The key part of online social networking is the connection. This is how people are related to each other (e.g., through friendship or common interest). A social network needs to facilitate this connection, and on top of that, will usually provide features which foster the connection, such as messaging, exchanging videos and photos and forming groups. By leveraging the uniqueness of QR codes and using them as bridges to the virtual worlds, a social network called LeapIn.it was built. LeapIn.it encourages random encounters with others based on shared interests. When the QR code is scanned, users are taken to a virtual room where others who have scanned the code also reside. Each room is themed, and those who stay residents of the rooms share that similar interest. However, encounters are fairly random (individuals probably won’t know each other beforehand). The aim of this seminar is to go through all the phases followed to design, implement and evaluate LeapIn.it online social network.
