Information Security Requirements in Patient-Centred Healthcare Support Systems

Title: Information Security Requirements in Patient-Centred Healthcare Support Systems.

Speaker: Dr. Shada Alsalamah, PhD  |  Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology, CCIS, KSU.

Synopsis:

Enabling Patient-Centred (PC) care in modern healthcare requires the flow of medical information with the patient between different healthcare providers as they follow the patient’s treatment plan. However, PC care threatens the stability of the balance of information security in the support systems since legacy systems fall short of attaining a security balance when sharing their information due to compromises made between its availability, integrity, and confidentiality. Results show that the main reason for this is that information security implementation in discrete legacy systems focused mainly on information confidentiality and integrity leaving availability a challenge in collaboration. Through an empirical study using domain analysis, observations, and interviews, this paper identifies a need for six information security requirements in legacy systems to cope with this situation in order to attain the security balance in systems supporting PC care implementation in modern healthcare.

Dr. Shada Alsalamah:

I am an Assistant Professor of Information Technology (IT) in the College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) at King Saud University (KSU), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2014, I completed a PhD degree in healthcare information systems’ security and privacy, and received an MSc degree in 2010 in Strategic Information Systems with Information Assurance from the School of Computer Science & Informatics (COMSC) at Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK. I am experienced in conducting interdisciplinary research to address complex information security and privacy issues in multi-agent collaborative environments with distributed information systems. I introduced a roadmap towards securing collaborative environments at both strategic and technical levels, and developed a proof-of-concept prototype system to secure modern patient-centred collaborative healthcare.
