Hackathon

Hackathons, Ideathons and Me
Dr. Eiman Kanjo

Hackathons are becoming trends in many organizations including Facebook, Google and Microsoft. Now they are spreading to academia and women have their own hackathons as well. But what are Hackathons or Ideathons all about? How do they differ from the usual programming competitions?
Here’s a standard recipe for a Hackathon.
1.Gather a bunch of coders in a place.
2.Supply them plentiful amounts of food, dessert and caffeine.
3.Tell them to get cracking for 24 or 48 hours.
This is not necessarily a good Hackathon! A good Hackathon is about fun hacking into an API or programming tool and development. Also it is about meeting other people with similar technical expertise.
Dr. Eiman Kanjo will review some of the recent Hackathon and Ideathon events she participated in as a mentor or a judge. In particular she will shed the light on her recent experience with the Hackathon event at New York University, Abu Dhabi, February, 2013.

Date: March 11, 2013
Time: 12-1pm
Location: Research Center Auditorium, Building 2
